Sea-doo’s have been getting rave reviews for their Deep Propulsion vehicles but that doesn’t take anything away from yet another great DPV they have; the Sea-doo Seascooter Dolphin SD5542. Let’s get down to brass tacks.
The SD5542 is built for pools and still water, unlike some of its more powerful counterparts that are made for deep diving, it can be placed in the low end category of sea-scooters. It retails at $310.90 or the Australian equivalent A$ 399 from https://underwater.com.au/shop/sea-scooters/sea-doo-seascooters.html although sites like Amazon have it in stock for about US$ 217. However, some buyers have complained of a no return policy from Amazon. Given its capabilities, you might want to get it from official distributors as they offer great support and warranty.
Weight and Build.
Don’t let the plastic material fool you. The design of the SD5542 is super compact. At 5.4kgs, it provides just the right amount of buoyancy even though it gives you a solid 15ft/5m in depth. Despite being lightweight, it packs a number of safety precautions like, dual trigger functionality, water resistant circuitry, safety grille, positive buoyancy and auto-shut off when the triggers are released. Kids have been fully considered in the development of these safety measures. Cleaning sand out of the seals has been made easy too, as all you have to do is either use fresh water or brush out anything that could compromise efficiency. The grip around the triggers give the user a very comfortable feel while using the Dolphin. It may also be important to note that the bright color comes in handy in terms of visibility.
Battery and Speed
The SD5542 comes equipped with a rechargeable 12V/7Ah battery that powers up to speeds of 2.0mph/3.2kph. Official distributors also sell separately, 12V/7.5Ah VLRA battery for about US$ 38. The inbuilt battery is supposed to give you about an hour and a half of use. As with any DPV, the weight of user may have an effect on the speeds promised by the manufacturer, so you might not want to put too much strain on it if you’re in it for a faster thrill.
There are some precautions, however that you should take with the battery. During its normal cycle of use , it may release potentially harmful gasses, in what is known as off-gassing. This can be taken care off with a few simple tips to remember. Charge the Sea-doo Seascooter Dolphin only using the manufacturer approved charger, you can’t install the battery until just before use and charge the battery as soon as possible with 24 hours of use. There are more precautions though, that are indicated on the manual.
All in all, the Sea-doo Seascooter Dolphin is a machine you will enjoy, be it at your pool or at the lake with the family or with friends. Repairs may be available at your local dive shop but on the bright side, it’s fairly easy to maintain if taken care of and original spares can be found at authorized resellers.
